  • Work on fast tacks and other manoeuvres with minimal use of the rudder.
  • Know the sweet spot where VMG is maximised on every point of sailing and in every wind.
  • Know the rules of sailing.
  • Work windshifts.
  • Be aware of geographical shifts on the lake.
  • Never be caught in irons.
  • Think ahead and postion your boat when approaching marks and other boats.
  • In winds less than around 2 or 3 Knots, position yourself forward to lift the stern.
  • Upwind, in the ealy stages of the leg, never sail to the laylines.
  • Hone your speed, time and distance skills to be on the line at the start.
  • Tune your sail/s to suit the conditions and refer to your class association for boat tuning hints.
  • Check your performance at varying wind speeds. Should you concentrate on heavy or light air sailing?
